On Good Friday, we were visited by three enchanting Austrian ladies who were very interested in learning about our Sherry wines.  Discover Sherry organized a memorable evening for them.  We started out in front of the Iglesia Mayoral in El Puerto de Santa Maria.

Slowly, the Plaza de España filled up with people who came to witness the start of the Good Friday procession in which the brotherhoods of Solitude, the Holy Burial and of St. Francis de Paul, all participated.

We were standing in the perfect spot – right in front of the Church´s main entrance through which the entire procession passed.  The afternoon was grey, and threatened to rain, but in the end there was no rain and the procession was able to come out of the church and wind its way through the city streets.

It was a wonderful experience.  Our Austrian friends were truly impressed and they were sharing photos, via the internet´s social networks, with their family and friends in Vienna.

Afterwards, we started our Sherry wines intensive course.  At our first stop, we tried an excellent Fino Pavón and some ¨montaditos¨ tapas.  We talked about the Sherry Triangle, its climate, its albariza soil, the grape varieties, and the harvest.  We then answered all of the questions that they each had.

At our second stop we tried an Oloroso Sherry, with some more savory tapas.  We then talked about other Sherry topics such as fermentation, types of aging, the variety of wines, and their history.

We also had a glass of manzanilla wine, showed them photos of our cathedral-like bodegas, had more tapas, and at our last stop, when we asked for a glass of Cream Sherry, it was time to discuss the blending process which is used to create some Sherry wines.  We also discussed how, during a period in history, each client (especially the English clients) would submit their own particular formula for the blend of Sherry wines which they preferred.  For dessert, we asked for leche frita (fried milk pudding) which was a hit.  And, of course, we could not omit the cup of Vanilla ice cream whith Pedro Ximenez wine.  A raging success, as we expected (it is a dessert formula that never fails).

We achieved our goal:  that our new friends, Doris, Beate and Alexandra, returned to Austria loving Sherry wines.

We have attached the photos that we took at the procession.  Enjoy!
