To celebrate European Enotourism Day, Discover Sherry and the Hotel Pinomar hosted a Sherry wine tasting with wines from the González Obregón winery. The tapas were provided by the Discover Sherry team.
We had a very special guest speaker, Alejandro Narváez, from the Forlong winery. He talked to us about the Sherry wines that are produced in El Puerto. He is the son of Colette and Antonio who are both members of the Discover Sherry team. Alejandro and Rocio Aspera are the creators of local wines that are produced at the Forlong winery in El Puerto.
It was a very interesting presentation, since Alejandro spoke about the unique characteristics of the wines that are made in El Puerto. He told us that the El Puerto Sherry wines possess the smoothness of Manzanilla wines, which are produced in Sanlúcar, and the body of Fino Sherries that are produced in Jerez. This he attributed to the saline character of the soils that make up the El Puerto “terroir.”
After the presentation, Alejandro talked about the history of the González Obregón winery and he presented each wine as it was perfectly paired with the wonderful tapas that were served. With the mosto and the Fino Sherry we served some Sushi: California roll, Salmon Maki, Goma Wakame; some cecina and chorizo sausages from León, and a unique tuna sandwich called Dobladillo de Cadiz.
With the Amontillado sherry, we served banderillas and esparagus with Mexican salsa, and with the Oloroso sherry we served a Villeroy roll and garbanzo beans with spinach which is a typical dish in Seville.
The cream sherry was harmonized with an exquisite coconut and lime soup; small pastry tarts filled with Paté and carmelized onions, and with cream cheese and red chile jelly. There was also a fruit brochette drizzled with a wine reduction sauce.
Lastly, we tasted the Pedro Ximenez sherry in a chocolate cup topped with a mango cream sauce; peanut butter cupcakes; and vanilla ice cream. The latter is a must-have since vanilla ice cream with a bit of Pedro Ximenez sherry covering is one of the best desserts that exist in this world. All of the Obregón wines, along with all of the Discover Sherry team tapas, were an indisputable hit.
In attendance that night included many Sherry Explorers, friends from Jerez, El Puerto, Cadiz, Zaragoza, Maine, New York, and Sweden among others. As always, after the tasting we had a a drawing for gifts that were all wine-related.
