Más de cincuenta D´Sherry Explorers y amigos visitamos el Yacimiento Fenicio de Doña Blanca.  Fue una visita intensa.  José Ignacio Delgado Poullet, técnico del Ayuntamiento de El Puerto y un verdadero especialista en todo lo que es la historia de esta ciudad, nos hizo trasladarnos mentalmente a la época en que se empezó a elaborar vino en esta zona hace más de 3.000 años.

More than 50 D´Sherry Explorers and friends visited the Doña Blanca Phoenician  archeological site.  It was an intense visit.  José Ignacio Delgado Poullet, a technician for the El Puerto city government and a true expert in the entire history of the city, was able to mentally transport us to an era when wine began to be made in this area, over 3,000 years ago.

 

El punto de encuentro fue en la Venta El Pollo en la carretera de Cortes.  Un sitio peculiar y cuyo perro guardián es un cerdo grande, negro y peludo.  Todos los coches salimos en fila india a la primera parada: el Mirador de San Cristobal. Es el  punto geodésico mas alto de la Bahía desde el que se puede ver el yacimiento. Pensé que sería buena idea llevar algunos salacots por si el sol pegaba y  así fue.

Our meeting point was the Venta El Pollo off of the carretera de Cortes.    It is a peculiar place where their guard dog is a big black-haired pig.  From there, we all headed out, in single file, to the first stop: the San Cristobal Overlook.  It is the highest geo-physical point in the Bay from which you can see the archaeological site.   I thought that it might be a good idea to take some of our Pith helmets in case it was too sunny, and it was.

Seguimos a Nani montaña arriba (bueno exagerando un poco).  La vista desde cualquiera de los lados es espectacular como podéis ver en las fotos.  ¡Increíble pensar que el mar llegaba hasta el pie del mirador!

We followed Nani up the “mountain” (okay, I´m exaggerating just a bit).   The view from either side was spectacular as you can see by the photos.  It is incredible to think that the sea once reached to the base of the overlook!

 

 

Hicimos un alto en el camino para ver un estupendo audiovisual sobre el yacimiento.  Mientras tanto teníamos una sorpresa reservada.  Habíamos llevado unas tapitas y Tío Pepe que todos disfrutamos.

We made a pit-stop to watch an audiovisual presentation regarding the archaeological excavation.  Meanwhile, we had prepared a pleasant surprise.  We had brought along some tapas and some Tío Pepe Fino which we all enjoyed.

Además del Tio Pepe había llevado dos botellas de Fragantia Nº 6 de Finca Constancia que no había probado antes. Fragantia Nº 6 es un blanco con la mitad de alcohol de un vino blanco tradicional. Elaborado a partir de uvas Moscatel, es goloso y con aromas de frutos exóticos y mil flores blancas que embriagan el paladar. Lleno de sensaciones, es fragante, alegre, fresco, jovial, sutil y delicado.  Fue un éxito total y desapareció en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

In addition to the Tio Pepe we brought along two bottles of  Finca Constancia Fragantia Nº 6  which I had never tried.  Fragantia Nº 6 is a white wine containing half of the alcohol of a regular white wine.  It is created from Moscatel grapes, is very sweet, and has mixed-flower and exotic fruit aromas which completely envelop the palate.  Full of a variety of sensations, it is fragrant, happy,  fresh, jovial, subtle, and delicate.  It was a complete hit and it disappeared in the blink of an eye. 

Seguimos con la visita y pudimos ver uno de los restos más interesantes para los Sherry Explorers: el lagar que se considera el más antiguo de Europa.  Se puede apreciar una cubeta para recibir la uva y dos depósitos en los que se vertía el mosto. La existencia de un horno en las cercanías, permite suponer que el mosto era cocido para preparaciones posteriores.

We continued on our visit and we were able to see one of the most interesting artifacts for the Sherry Explorers:  the wine-press which is considered to be the most ancient in Europe.  You can see a vat in which the grapes were placed and two recipients into which the freshly-pressed grape must was poured.  The existence of an oven nearby, allowed us to suppose that the grape must was cooked  for subsequent processing.

Una vez acabada la visita, pusimos rumbo a la Viña San Cayetano donde nos esperaba un festín.  Nos trataron de maravilla y la comida estaba buenísima.

After our visit,  we headed to the San Cayetano vineyard were a true feast was waiting for us.  The service was excellent and the food was fantastic.
