SHERRY WINE CELEBRATES THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS PIONEER DECLARATION AS A DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN

On the 19th of January, 1935, the Denomination of Origin for Sherry Wine was born. Its Regulations were published in the Madrid Gazette and it was the first Denomination of Origin in Spain.  It was also the first law that regulated wine in our country.   It was a pioneer document, which regulated and protected a unique product, a name, and a prestige which had been earned throughout the course of centuries.  It later served as a reference point for the development of other Denominations of Origin in the rest of Spain.

LOS VINOS DE JEREZ CELEBRAN EL 80 ANIVERSARIO DE SU PIONERA DECLARACIÓN COMO DENOMINACIÓN DE ORIGEN

El 19 de enero de 1935 nacía la Denominación de Origen de los Vinos de Jerez, con la publicación en la Gaceta de Madrid de su Reglamento, el primero nacido de la que también fue la primera Ley del Vino de nuestro país. Se trataba de un documento pionero, con el que se regulaba y se protegía un producto genuino, un nombre y un prestigio ganado durante siglos, y que servía como punto de partida para la aparición de otras Denominaciones de Origen en toda España.

The commemorative gala of the 80th Anniversary of the Denomination of Origin was celebrated at the magnificent Santo Domingo Cloisters en Jerez.  It was inaugurated by  Beltrán Domecq,  President of the Sherry Wine Regulatory Council,  César Saldaña, General Director  of the Regulatory Council, and  María del Carmen Sánchez Díaz, Mayor of the City of Jerez de la Frontera. With this celebration, the Regulatory Council´s aim was to honor each and every one of those persons who, throughout these past 80 years, have dedicated their lives to the promotion and protection of a unique national gem of incalculable value; one which is profoundly linked to the culture, the people, and the history of this region.

La gala conmemorativa del 80 Aniversario de la Denominación de Origen se celebró en los magníficos  Claustros de Santo Domingo en Jerez y fue inaugurada por Beltrán Domecq, presidente del Consejo Regulador de los Vinos de Jerez, César Saldaña, Director General del Consejo Regulador y María del Carmen Sánchez Díaz, Alcaldesa de Jerez de la Frontera. Con esta presentación el Consejo Regulador ha querido rendir homenaje a todas y cada una de las personas que durante estos 80 años han dedicado su vida a promocionar, proteger y defender un patrimonio único y de valor incalculable,  ligado profundamente a la cultura, las gentes y la historia de esta región.

In order to demonstrate the fine link between these oenological treasures and the local cuisine, Finos, Olorosos, Amontillados, Creams, and  Palos Cortados were harmonized with  creations by some of the most emblematic chefs in Jerez.  As a final touch, Jerez barman Eloy García prepared an exclusive offering  of “sherry cocktails,”  just for the occasion.   Discover Sherry was honored to be invited to this important celebration and we truly enjoyed seeing “Sherry friends” and toasting with great wines to the 80th anniversary.

Para poner de relieve los estrechos lazos de estos tesoros enológicos con la gastronomía local, Finos, Olorosos, Amontillados, Creams y Palos Cortados han armonizado con las creaciones de algunos de los restauradores más emblemáticos de Jerez. Como broche final, el barman jerezano Eloy García preparó para la ocasión una serie exclusiva de ‘sherry cocktails’.  Discover Sherry fue invitado a esta importante celebración y disfrutamos saludando a tantos buenos “Sherry amigos” y brindando con grandes vinos por este 80 aniversario.

In the words of the Regulatory Council´s President, Beltrán Domecq: “Our wines are  international  oenological gems, and they are references that are found at some of the most distinguished dining tables throughout the world.  It is necessary and proper that we be able  to count on a legal authority that can protect them and which can take them to the highest standards of wine-producing quality and excellence.”  Accordingly, we have achieved “80 years in defense of what is ours.”

 En palabras del presidente del Consejo Regulador, Beltrán Domecq: “Nuestros vinos son unas joyas para la enología internacional, son referente en las mesas más distinguidas de todo el mundo; es imprescindible que contemos con un cuerpo jurídico que los proteja y los lleve hacia las cotas más altas de calidad y excelencia vitivinícola”.  Se cumplen, por tanto, “80 años en defensa de lo nuestro”.
