…and the day arrived for the June Sherry Explorers´meeting. We had a full schedule so at the designated hour (well, almost) we began with the first item on the agenda.
Gloria Fernández, Events Director and Honorary Sherry Explorer, welcomed us all and indicated that it was an honor that the third exhibition of the Divino Jerez photography project, by photographer María Higuero, was to be held at the Hotel Pinomar. As we have mentioned in previous posts, the first was in Jerez and the second was held in New York, three months ago, and sponsored by Discover Sherry. Maribel Estévez, our guest speaker at the meeting that evening, honored us by cutting the inaugural ribbon. Afterwards, all in attendance joined in a toast with a glass of Fino Pando sherry provided by the Williams & Humbert Bodegas.

Next on our agenda was the swearing-in of the new Sherry Explorers. Prior to that, we briefed them on who we are and what we do; as well as on the oath that they were about to take and how it would change their lives. The 16 candidates donned their Pith helmets, and with a venencia in one hand and a glass of Tío Mateo, del Marqués del Real Tesoro fino sherry in the other, they took their oaths and ….. we are now 328 Sherry Explorers strong!!!
CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to our group of tireless explorers of Sherry wines.
After the swearing-in, we began our interview with our guest speaker, and new Sherry Explorer, Maribel Estévez. She is a Biologist, Oenologist, and a University of Cadiz Doctor Cum Laude. Maribel is charming and down-to-earth. It is real pleasure to converse with her. She told us about the passion that her father, José Estévez, had for Sherry wines and how the Bodegas Grupo Estévez were created. She also told us about the development of the winery´s technological infrastructure.
She also delighted us by explaining the wonder of “Genoma Music3 (VID-VINO-VIDA),” which has translated, into music, the characteristic genes of the yeasts that are responsible for the biological aging of sherry. This music can be heard throughout the winery building where the magnificent wines of this bodega are aged. There were many very-interesting questions. We all learned a lot and really enjoyed partaking in the benefit of Maribel´s extensive knowledge about our wines, which make up such an important part of her life.
Afterwards, there was thunderous applause, as well as gifts for our honored guests.
I highly recommend the book written by Maribel: “José Estévez y el Vino de Jerez” which is a tribute to her father, the winery´s founder. It is very, very interesting, entertaining, and contains some amazing photographs.
The final portion of our evening was spent enjoying Grupo Estevez sherry wines, as well as the tapas that had been brought by the Sherry Explorers to share. The table decoration, created by the artistic hand of Sofía Nieto, was dedicated to the journey that we made to New York just the month before in order to conduct a sherry wine tasting at La Nacional , as part of the FAEUSA national convention.
