Desafiamos al Paladar con Pepe Ferrer / We challenged our Palate with Pepe Ferrer


Con un ambiente de fiesta y carnaval celebramos nuestra reunión Desafiando al Paladar con nuestro invitado Pepe Ferrer, Embajador del Vino de Jerez que fue un auténtico éxito además de una clase magistral de los ilimitados maridajes con los vinos de jerez.

In a “carnavalesque” atmosphere, we held our last meeting  with our guest speaker Pepe Ferrer and his Palate-Challenge.  Pepe is a true Ambassador of Sherry wines.  His presentation was not only a complete success, it was master-class on the limitless pairing possibilities for sherry wines.

La decoración de nuestra artista, Sofía Nieto, estuvo dedicada al carnaval y cada mesa representaba uno de los carnavales más famosos del mundo.

The decorations for the event, created by our designer/artist  Sofía Nieto, had a Carnaval theme and at each table there were items that represented famous carnaval celebrations throughout the world.

Los vinos que catamos con los diferentes geles fueron vinos de jerez del Consejo Regulador Jerez-Xères-Sherry en concreto: Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso,  Cream, Moscatel  y Pedro Ximénez.

The wines, which we tasted along with various gelatin-style reductions, were sherries provided courtesy of the Jerez-Xères-Sherry Wine Regulatory Council.  Specifically they were: Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso,  Cream, Moscatel, and Pedro Ximénez.

Con este cuadro nos fue explicando que sabores y platos armonizan mejor con cada vino.  Muy pronto publicaremos un post contando un poco más a fondo estos maridajes.

Using this graph, Pepe explained to us which dishes and tastes harmonized best with each wine.  Soon, we will post an article that explains these pairings in a bit more detail.

¡La presentación de Pepe Ferrer ha sido interesantísima,  asombrosa, fascinante, instructiva…! son algunas de las conclusiones a las que llegaron los Sherry Explorers en la reunión del 3 de marzo.  Todos nos quedamos sorprendidos, una y otra vez, experimentando cómo cambiaba un sabor con los distintos vinos, increíble.   Esta forma de cata maridada de geles de guisos o platos de sabores de diferentes cocinas del mundo es muy original y hace que podamos comprobar, sin ningún lugar a dudas, la versatilidad de los vinos de Jerez.  Hay un jerez prácticamente para cada plato de la cocina del mundo mundial.

Pepe Ferrer´s presentation was very “interesting, amazing, fascinating, instructive…!”  These were some of the words used, by various Sherry Explorers, to describe our March 3rd meeting.  We were all pleasantly surprised, once and again, as we combined each of the tastes with the various wines.  An incredible experience.   With this innovative form of pairing  (utilizing gelatin-style reductions of stews or dishes from different  cuisines throughout the world) we were able to experience and confirm, without a doubt, the versatility of Sherry wines.  There is a Sherry wine for practically every dish, from every type of cuisine, throughout the entire world.

Los nuevos Sherry Explorers hicieron su juramento y… ¡¡ya somos 436!! ¡Bienvenidos a esta gran familia de amantes y eternos estudiantes del vino de jerez!

Our new Sherry Explorers were sworn in …and we are now 436 strong!  Welcome to our huge family of eternal students and lovers of Sherry wines!

El jurado de las tapas estuvo formado por verdaderos expertos, Miguel y Marc, cocineros recién licenciados de la Basque Culinary Center; Guillermo,  también estudiante de cocina y Pepe Ferrer experto gastrónomo.  Eligieron estos tres platos de entre los presentados por los Sherry Explorers.  Fue una decisión difícil porque como ya sabemos el nivel de las tapas siempre es un nivelazo.  Gracias al jurado y enhorabuena a los “chefs”.

Our tapa-jury was comprised of true experts: Miguel and Marc, chefs who are recent graduates of the Basque Culinary Center; Guillermo, who is also a culinary student; and  Pepe Ferrer , who is a culinary  expert.  They selected three tapas out of the many that were provided by the Sherry Explorers.  It was a difficult decision because, as we all know, the tapas that are provided by our members are usually incredible. Thank you to our judges, and congratulations to our  member”chefs.”
