Fue una gran alegría cuando mis amigas las hermanas Priegue me dijeron que venían a Jerez con otras 13 amigas.  Merche y yo nos conocimos en Las Palmas hace muuuuchos años y hemos viajado por unos cuantos países.  Su hermana Maribel y yo trabajamos juntas en la EXPO 92 en Sevilla.  Muchos buenos recuerdos.  Este grupo de amigas que vino con ellas, tienen en común que pasan tiempo en Puentedey (Burgos).  Son de Bilbao, Burgos, Madrid, y hasta una sevillana.

I was very happy when my friends, the Priegue sisters, told me that they were planning to visit Jerez along with 13 of their friends.  Merche and I met in Las Palmas (Canary Islands) many, many years ago and we have traveled together to many other countries.  Merche´s sister, Maribel, and I worked together at the 1992 World EXPO en Seville.  Many fond memories. The group of friends that accompanied them, all have one thing in common – they spend their free time in a very small town called Puentedey, which is near Burgos in northern Spain.  They are from Bilbao, Burgos, or Madrid and one is from Seville.

Estuvieron solo un fin de semana pero muy bien aprovechao.  Nada más aterrizar pasaron por el Hotel Doña Blanca a dejar sus maletas y enseguida a a Bodega Díez Mérito donde un grupo del equipo Discover Sherry, Encarna, Ingrid, Rosario, Vicky y José Luis, les estábamos esperando.  María de la Torre, Directora de Enoturismo de la Bodega nos hizo una visita estupenda.

They were here for only a weekend, but it was a few days well spent.   As soon as they landed, they went to the Hotel Doña Blanca to drop off their luggage, and then on to the Díez Mérito Bodega where a group from the  Discover Sherry team, Encarna, Ingrid, Rosario, Vicky and José Luis, was waiting for them.  María de la Torre, the Enotourism Director for the winery, provided us with a fantastic tour.

Disfrutamos mucho tomando una copita y los aperitivos al solecito.  Luego el Catering de la Venta Antonio sirvió la comida en la bodega.  Un excelente menú.  Llamó la atención el tocino de cielo con crema de queso Payoyo, ñam, ñam.

We enjoyed ourselves by having our appetizers and a glass of sherry while basking under the sun.   Afterwards, the Venta Antonio Catering service  provided us with  lunch inside the winery.  It was an excellent offering.  We were especially impressed by the custard flan with Payoyo-cheese dessert, yum-yum.

Después de comer les conté quiénes éramos los Sherry Explorers y lo que supondría para ellas hacer el juramento.  ¡Les cambiaría la vida!  Encantadas con la propuesta, se pudieron su salacot, copa de jerez en una mano, venencia en la otra, e hicieron el juramento. ¡Ya somos 441 Sherry Explorers!

After lunch, I told them about who the Sherry Explorers were, and I offered them the opportunity to take the oath by telling them that it would change their lives!  Enthused by my offer, they donned their pith-helmets and, with a glass of sherry in one hand and a venencia in the other, they were sworn in.  We are now 441 Sherry Explorers strong!

Por la tarde fuimos a visitar el Palacio del Virrey Laserna.  Para mí era también la primera vez que lo visitaba y es verdaderamente impresionante.  Te traslada a otra época.  La colección de arte es increíble y lo mejor de todo es que nos enseño el palacio Álvaro Moreno Landahl, que nació y se crío en el Palacio y él y sus hermanos, ¡fueron al Colegio Miller!  El oír en primera persona a alguien contándote, esta es mi bisabuela, aquí comemos cuando nos reunimos la familia, esta es mi madre, …es emocionante.

In the afternoon, we went to visit the Palace of the Viceroy of Laserna.  It was also my first visit there.  It is truly impressive and it transcends you to another era.  The art collection is incredible and, to top it off, our guide was Álvaro Moreno Landahl  who was born in the palace.  He and his brothers were all students at the Miller School.  To hear him speak, in first person, about a portrait of his great-grandmother, the room where his family would congregate, and pictures of his mother…was very exciting.

Cenamos de tapitas en El Almacén.  Un sitio que nos encanta, tapas muy ricas y servicio impecable, muy acogedor y en pleno centro. (Calle Latorre 6, Jerez).

We had tapas for dinner at the El Almacén restaurant.  We love the place.  They serve delicious tapas and the service is impeccable. It is a cozy place and is located in the heart of the city (Calle Latorre 6, Jerez).

Visitaron El Alcázar, la Catedral, Santo Domingo y alguna iglesia más.

They visited the Alcázar, the Cathedral, the Santo Domingo church, and a few other churches.

Al día siguiente, después de la visita al Alcázar, la visita a la Bodega González Byass.   Merche y Maribel ya la habían visitado dos o tres veces en la época en que mi padre trabajaba allí y querían que sus amigas también la conociesen.  Elección perfecta.  Una gran lección de la historia del jerez y de una de las bodegas más importantes, para este grupo de nuevas Sherry Explorers.

The following day, after the visit to the Alcázar, we visited the González-Byass winery.   Merche and Maribel had visited the winery two or three times before.  It was a long time ago, when my father worked there, so they wanted their friends to experience it as well.  It was an excellent choice.  For this group of new Sherry Explorers, it was a very informative introduction to the history of Sherry wine at one of the biggest and best known bodegas in Jerez.

Después de una buena lección sobre el vino de jerez y la Bodega Tío Pepe, tocaba flamenquito.  Nos esperaba el Presidente de la Peña La Bulería, José Manuel Rodríguez.  Nos contó la historia de la Peña y algunos de los artistas más famosos que han pasado por ella.  La Comida muy típica, una buena berza con sus avíos que degustamos con buenos jereces de González Byass y de de postre un corte que a algunas nos recordó a cuando éramos mucho más jovencitas. Gracias Nieves y Arturo, socios de esta peña y Sherry Explorers, por esta entrañable experiencia.

After our excellent lesson on Sherry wine at the Tio Pepe bodega, it was time to learn about flamenco.   We were greeted by the President of the  Peña La Bulería (an association of flamenco aficionados), José Manuel Rodríguez.  He told us about the history of the association´s headquarters and some of the famous flamenco artists that had dropped by there to perform.   We were served a traditional lunch – a very tasty berza stew with all of its trimmings, paired with some wonderful González-Byass sherry wines.  For dessert, we had a corte (square cut icecream) which, for some, reminded us of when we were little girls.  Thank you Nieves and Arturo, members of this peña and Sherry Explorers, for providing us with this charming experience.

Paseo por el centro, refresquito al sol en la Plaza del Arenal y muchas preguntas sobre Jerez y sobre los jereces incluyendo el misterioso palo cortado.

Exploring the center of town,  it was sunny but cool at the  Plaza del Arenal.  There were many questions about the city of Jerez and about Sherry wines, including those relating to the mysterious Palo Cortado.

Terminamos el día el Bar Juanito  (C/ Pesacadería Vieja 8-10) es un clásico y no podía faltar en el programa.  Además de las famosas alcachofas disfrutamos de otras delicias con buenos vinos.

We finished our day at the Bar Juanito restaurant (C/Pesacadería Vieja 8-10) which is a classic and that had to be on our agenda.   In addition to its famous artichoke dish, we enjoyed other delights along with excellent wines.

Y con mucha tristeza había llegado el último día.  Por la mañana pasearon en el centro y visitaron algunos monumentos.  A mediodía les esperábamos en el restaurante Cuchara de Palo donde el chef Carlos Herrero nos había preparado un estupendo menú que comenzó con un estupendo “Bloody Sherry” a la llegada.   Seguimos con Ensaladilla de gambas, langostinos y codium.
Croquetas caseras; Flor de alcachofa a baja temperatura; Tallarines de calabacín, bacon ahumado y pesto de berros;
Tempura de langostinos y salsa kimchee; Merluza frita y tártara; Postres de la casa y como no, buenos jereces, incluido un Palo Cortado Leonor de Gonzále Byass.

No se querían ir y prometieron volver ya que queda mucho por visitar en el Marco del Jerez.

And, sadly, the last day of their whirlwind visit had arrived.  In the morning we walked about the center of town and visited a few historical sites.  At noon, we arrived at the Cuchara de Palo  restaurant where the Chef, Carlos Herrero, had prepared an excellent menu.  It started off with an incredible “Bloody Sherry,” upon our arrival.   We then had a salad consisting of shrimp, prawns, and sea algae.  There were home-made croquettes; Heart of artichoke slow-cooked at a low temperature;  Zucchini noodles, smoked bacon and watercress pesto;  Prawn tempura and kimchee sauce;  Fried hake and tartar sauce;  Home-made desserts and, of course, great sherry wines including Leonor Palo Cortado Sherry from the González Byass winery.

They didn´t want to leave, but they promised that they would return since there was so much more to do and visit in the Sherry region of Jerez.

Queridas Puentedey Sherry Explorers: gracias por vuestra visita, por disfrutar a tope de Jerez, por todo el interés y todas vuestras preguntas (incluidas las del Palo Cortado…), por enamoraros de nuestros vinos, por vuestro juramento de Sherry Explorers y aquí os esperamos para cuando querías volver a seguir aprendiendo y conociendo esta estupenda tierra.

Dear Puentedey Sherry Explorers:  Thanks for your visit; for enjoying Jerez to the max; for all of the interest that you´ve shown, including all of your questions (especially about Palo Cortado…); for falling in love with our wines; and for being sworn-in as Sherry Explorers.  We will be waiting here, whenever you want to return and continue learning and visiting this wonderful land.
