It was a very different meeting, in an emblematic and historical site such as is the Royal Bullring in El Puerto de Santa Maria. It was a cultural visit which we thought would interest the Sherry Explorers and their guests. We greeted everyone with a glass of La Garrocha Sherry wine from the Grant winery. Along with the sherry, we were able to enjoy the exhibition of artwork, by different painters, which is displayed at the Bullring´s exhibition hall.
The director of the Bullring, Raúl Capdevilla ( who is also a Sherry Explorer), provided us with an extensive tour of the structure and explained to us the purpose and tradition relating to each of its sections, including its chapel.
After the tour, a good number of our invited guests took the Sherry Explorer oath in the middle of the bullring, along with their Pith helmet or camoflauge-hat, a venencia, and a glass of La Garrocho Oloroso Sherry wine. It was truly an interesting swearing-in at an impressive site. We now are 505 Sherry Explorers!!
The Discover Sherry team had everything prepared in order to listen to the presentation provided by our friend, guest, and fellow Sherry Explorer, José Luis Rodríguez Peral.
He spoke about the different Sherry wines and the bullfighters´ various passes. Meanwhile, we tasted some excellent Sherry wines of note provided by the Caballero – Lustau Group, and which even included its classic Ponche Caballero. There were some very interesting questions and the evening sky was perfect. José Luis is a true expert on bullfighting and he has written several books on the subject.
Attached is a video that was put together by José de la Peña, and which includes many photos of the event. (Other photos were also taken by Teresa Rubio, Ingrid Miller, Antonio Narvaez, Vicky Miller)
