La Vuelta al Mundo “fue la mayor hazaña de la humanidad”, como nos contó recientemente en una fascinante presentación Enrique J. Román.  El medio centenar de invitados que le escuchamos quedamos realmente impresionados. Esta historia real de la primera circunnavegación del mundo, que comenzó con Fernando de Magallanes y su tripulación, un total de 147 hombres, puede compararse con un thriller alucinante.  De esos 147 hombres, ¡sólo 18 regresaron a Sanlúcar de Barrameda con Juan Sebastián Elcano!  Algunos murieron por enfermedad, otros fueron ejecutados, otros murieron en batalla o en accidentes, algunos desaparecieron o se quedaron en alguna de las islas que visitaron durante el viaje. El resto del grupo llegó finalmente a las Islas Molucas y consiguió regresar a Sanlúcar con un cargamento de especias que no sólo cubrió todos los gastos de la expedición, sino que proporcionó un saludable beneficio adicional a sus inversores.

La Vuelta al Mundo (The Voyage Around the World)  “the greatest feat of mankind” as recently stated in a fascinating presentation by Enrique J. Román.  The fifty, or so, guests who listened to Mr. Roman were truly impressed. This true story of the first circumnavigation of the world, which started with Ferdinand Magellan and his crew, a total of 147 men, can almost be compared to a mind-blowing thriller.  Of those 147 men only 18 of them returned to Sanlúcar de Barrameda with Juan Sebastián Elcano!  Some died of disease, others were executed, some died in battle or in accidents, some disappeared or remained on one the islands they visited during the voyage. The remainder of the group eventually reached the Molucca Islands and managed to return to Sanlúcar with a cargo of spices that not only covered all of the expedition’s expenses,  but provided an additional and healthy profit for its investors.

Después de la charla los nuevos Sherry Explorers hicieron su juramento, brindamos con Manzanilla de Sanlúcar y disfrutamos de la cena.

El sorteo de los regalos fue muy divertido y en concreto la mesa “TIMOR” se llevo un montón de ellos, no sé, no sé, algo de magia había por ahí.

After the presentation, the new Sherry Explorers took their oath, toasted with Manzanilla de Sanlúcar, and enjoyed a nice dinner.

The gift raffle was a lot of fun.   The guests seated at the “TIMOR” table ended up winning a lot of them.  There seemed to be some magic there.
