1. Silvia Flores, Asistente al Hacedor de vinos, comenzó con una introducción al sistema de criaderas y soleras y de ahí fuimos a una zona de la bodega La Constancia y catamos el Tío Pepe seleccionado para embotellar en rama de este año 2023.  Eran dos botas distintas separadas por otra bota en medio.  Silvia Flores y José Argudo, Marketing Manager, nos mostraron cómo se diferenciaba el fino de la primera bota, la que estaba al principio de la solera, del fino de la tercera bota arropada por botas alrededor.  Fue una experiencia única.

1- Silvia Flores, Assistant Winemaker, began with an introduction to the ´criaderas and soleras´ system. Afterwards, we continued to an area of the La Constancia winehouse and tasted the Tío Pepe that was selected for bottling ‘en rama’ for 2023.  There were two different wine barrels separated by another barrel in the middle.  Silvia Flores and José Argudo, Marketing Manager, both showed us how to differentiate between the fino sherry drawn from the first barrel (the one at the beginning of the solera level) from the fino sherry drawn from the third barrel, which was surrounded by other barrels.  It was a unique experience.

2. Nuestra siguiente actividad fue la visita al Botellero Histórico que hacía mucho que quería visitar. Un templo de la enología donde reposan más de 5.000 vinos de Jerez del siglo XIX y principios del XX, un valor documental incalculable que cuenta una crónica vitivinícola única y transmite el legado de cinco generaciones de la familia González.  Me permití hacer un brindis especial por Don Eduardo Miller Margolles, mi padre, que ese día, 31 de marzo, hubiera cumplido 94 años y que trabajó muchos años en González Byass y adoraba su trabajo.

2- Our next activity was to visit to the Historic Bottle Center, which I had longed to visit. It is a temple of oenology where more than 5,000 sherry wine bottles rest.  Most, are from the 19th and early 20th centuries.  The Center also contains a collection of documents, which are of an incalculable value, and that is a unique wine-making chronicle, tracing the legacy of five González family generations.  I allowed myself to make a special toast to Don Eduardo Miller Margolles, my father, who on the day of our visit, March 31^st, would have been 94 years old.  He worked at the González Byass  winery many years and adored his work.

3. Jesús Anguita, Director de la Fundación González Byass, nos hizo una visita a la exposición “Tío Pepe, de Jerez al mundo: historia de un icono” la exposición de la Fundación González Byass que relata la crónica publicitaria del Fino de Jerez que primero fue persona, luego vino y, finalmente, icono.  Muy, muy interesante.

3- Jesús Anguita, Director of the González Byass Foundation,  gave us a tour of the exhibit entitled: “Tío Pepe, de Jerez al mundo: historia de un icono” (Tío Pepe, from Jerez to the world: history of an icon).  It is an exhibit prepared by the González Byass Foundation which is an advertising chronicle of Tio Pepe sherry wine. The wine was first a person, then a wine bottle, and, finally, as a world-wide recognizable icon.  Very, very interesting.

4. Finalmente visitamos el Real Alcázar de Jerez de la mano de María Bermúdez que nos explicó todo lo que vimos a fondo.  Es un conjunto de edificaciones fortificadas de origen almohade (probablemente siglo XII, siendo el edificio almohade más antiguo de la península ibérica), al que posteriormente se añadieron edificaciones barrocas palaciegas, y que es uno de los principales monumentos de la ciudad; Se encuentra en el ángulo suroeste de la muralla que rodeaba a la ciudad, junto a la Alameda Vieja.  La visita es espectacular, Tengo que reconocer que estábamos mataos, llevábamos casi tres horas de pie y se notaba.  Pero disfrutamos a tope y aprendimos un montón de cosas super interesantes. 

4- As a final treat, we visited the Real Alcázar of Jerez, located across the street from the Gonzalez-Byass winery.  María Bermúdez, our guide, explained everything that we saw, in depth.  It is a set of fortified buildings of Almohad origin (probably XII century, being the oldest Almohad building on the Iberian Peninsula).  In later centuries,  palatial Barroque buildings were added.  The Alcazar is one of the principal monuments in the City of Jerez. It is located within the southwest corner of the fortress wall that used to surround the city (next to Alameda Vieja park).  The visit is spectacular!   I have to admit that we were exhausted after our visit.  We had been standing for almost three hours and it showed.  But, we enjoyed the day to the fullest and learned a lot of very interesting things.
