Not long ago, a large group of Sherry Explorers and friends gathered at the Palacio Virrey Laserna to learn about the history of the de la Riva winery.
After welcoming everyone, I explained who the Sherry Explorers are, where we come from, what we do, and all of those interesting things. I introduced the gentlemen who were going to conduct the presentation that evening. On the one hand, there was José Luis Jiménez, a local historian and researcher. And, on the other hand, there were Frank de la Riva and Luis de la Riva, heirs and a vital part of this interesting family.
The presentation was very interesting. We will publish a summary of the same at the end of this post. The next step was the swearing-in of those in attendance who were not yet members of the Sherry Explorers. There was a good group of the de la Riva family, some students from the old Miller School (I always look forward to seeing them), and various other attendees, 19 in total.
They had already taken the oath and it had already changed their lives! We toasted with a glass of Marco de Jerez sherry wine and welcomed our new Sherry Explorers.
One of the wines we toasted with was a manzanilla wine which was graciously provided by a new winery founded by Willy Pérez and Ramiro Ibáñez. They have named the wine “M.
The other wines we tasted were from the Cruz Vieja brand of sherry wines, provided by the Bodegas Faustino González. They were excellent, as always. The tapas were prepared by the Sherry Girls.
The original de la Riva winery was: ‘one of the most prestigious sherry wineries in Jerez de la Frontera. It was recognized to be among the best for the excellence of its wines and the great quality of its soleras’. The de la Riva family was originally from Alfoz de Llaredo, in Cantabria. For this reason, the information provided by Ignacio Ruiz de Villegas, a descendant of highlanders and related to a winemaking family settled in Jerez de la Frontera. His work “Montañeses de Jerez” (2000) is enlightening: ‘Antonia Petra Pomar y de Antoñán, married to Francisco de la Riva y de la Riva, descendants of a family of highlanders from Ruiloba, and involved in the Sherry-wine and food stores businesses since the eighteenth century.
His son Manuel Antonio de la Riva y Pomar would eventually become a Member of Parliament and President of the Jerez de la Frontera Chamber of Commerce. Francisco was able to pass on to Manuel, his only son, the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit that characterized him.
Since the year 1878, the winery operated under the name of Manuel Antº. de la Riva. Manuel Antonio de la Riva y Pomar was born in Ruiloba (Santander) on December 31, 1840. According to an advertising pamphlet, he moved to Jerez when he was only 20 years old, acquiring an old winery established in 1776. It was on Arcos Street, opposite of what is now the Lustau winery. The municipal census of 1889, however, indicates that he settled in Jerez de la Frontera in 1865, when he was 25 years old.
In 1878, when he was thirty-eight years old, he married Guadalupe González de Tagle y Villar from Jerez. Among their children, Petra (1882-1956) is best remembered. She married José Domecq Núñez de Villavicencio in 1910.
The winery was comparatively small, but prestigious, given its very old and very fine soleras. It owned 53 hectares of vineyards together with that of Agustín Blázquez in the Lower Pago Macharnudo area, which included the vineyards of Los Arcos, La Riva, and Sabel. These would eventually be passed on to the Domecq winery in the 1970’s, and are currently owned by the Estévez Winery Group.

For this reason, he was elected President of the Chamber of Commerce of the city of Jerez de la Frontera during the period from 1890 to 1900, as well as honorary President in 1902.
On September 24th of 1909, he died in Jerez de la Frontera, at his home located at number 10, San Miguel Street.
