Blog Trip “Setas y Tío Pepe”, Blog Trip “Mushrooms and Tío Pepe”

Llegamos a Puerto Real, recogimos a José Manuel Tenorio y seguimos camino.

I had received an invitation to attend Tio Pepe´s Blog Trip II and I was delighted.  The day before, however, it began to rain like it had not rained since before this year´s long summer.  I thought that, surely, our trip would be cancelled and, just in case, I slept with my mobile phone at my side awaiting the message that the trip was cancelled.  That message never arrived and, just before sunrise, Kiko Sánchez picked me up at the pre-arranged spot.  We were scheduled to arrive at Alcalá de los Gazules at 8:30 a.m.  The night before had been one of continuous and pouring rain.  We arrived in Puerto Real, picked up José Manuel Tenorio, and we continued on our journey.

We arrived at the El Campanero restaurant and everything was prepared for a delicious breakfast which included toast with “manteca colorá” and “zurrapa”.  In addition, Jorge Puerto, who is El Gazul´s master cheesemaker, brought us some exquisite goat cheese which we paired with an Alfonso Oloroso.  It was the first time that I had included sherry wine as part of my breakfast, but it was deemed necessary since we would need as much energy that we could gather for the adventure that awaited us.

We were greeted at the Los Alcornocales Nature Reserve visitor center where it was explained to us that the Reserve is considered to be the most extensive cork tree forest in all of Spain and one of the largest in the world.  It is in a magnificent state of conservation which ensures the quality of the cork harvests.  Below, I will provide you with a link to the Reserve´s webpage.

From there we headed to Benalup where we picked up Guillermo Guerrero from the Los Alcornocales Mycological Association, and from there we proceeded into the Nature Reserve.  Upon arrival to our rendezvous point we were greeted by a warm and welcoming, campfire.  José  had some El Gazul cheese and some Leonor Palo Cortado to share with everyone.  Rain,  fire, forest, Leonor and good friends…. it was a magical moment.

It continued to sprinkle, rain, and cloud-up.  The clear skies that were forecast never appeared; luckily, José Manuel came prepared and provided us all with some enormous rain gear, like the type that is used by hunters, and, as you see in the photo, they fit us all perfectly.  Once we were covered, we were on our way to hunt for mushrooms.

The variety of mushrooms which we found was incredible.  There were all types, shapes, and colors, including one which is hallucinogenic which grows in (if you´ll excuse the expression) “cow-patties!”

Don´t think that it was all fun and games.  The life of a blogger can be tough and dangerous!

After our mushroom stroll we went to Medina Sidonia where we enjoyed a lunch that was paired with local mushrooms and, of course, was also paired with a special selection of González Byass sherry wines.  I highly recommend this family-owned restaurant.  It is beautiful and also has an extensive menu.

Carmen Prieto is the Head Chef and her husband, Andrés Rodríguez, is in charge of the dining area.  Miriam Rodríguez Prieto is their daughter and is also a chef.  It is a family operation staffed by a first-rate team.

As you can see, the variety of mushrooms was amazing.

dishes

All of the dishes on the tasting menu were exquisite and the wines…what can I say….were select and marvelous.

A great day which, I believe, was transformed into a perfect one by the weather.  As they say in Spain, “every adventure tends to be an adventure.”
