Zambombas are traditional Christmas celebrations held in Jerez and other nearby cities.  Their origin dates back to the 18th century, and were typically celebrated in the inside patios of the communal houses in the flamenco neighborhoods of Jerez.  There they would share food and drink which would include “pestiños” and Sherry wines.  They would also share Spanish Christmas carols, flamenco-style,  accompanied by zambomba drums, tambourines, and aniset bottles – all used as rhythmical musical instruments.   Last year, the Jerez zambomba celebration was declared as an Event of Cultural Interest, since it is considered as “one of the Christmas cultural expressions of major ethnological interest in the autonomous community.”

The El Puerto de Santa María Ateneo Wine Club also celebrated their zambomba which, by the way, coincided with the thirteenth anniversary of its founding.

We first enjoyed a good meal with the requisite berza,  and the Christmas pestiños as dessert, all accompanied by mosto wine, a variety of Sherry wines, and other wines produced in the province of Cadiz.

We sang almost all of the Christmas songs that were in the booklet prepared by Paqui, one of the members, and we all had a great time.
