Hola, soy EDU y os voy a contar el maravilloso e intenso viaje que hice a Nueva York para contarle a un grupo muy interesante de personas muchas cosas sobre nuestra Ruta del Vino y Brandy de Jerez y para hacer una cata maridada con nuestros vinos.  Tuvo lugar en La Nacional, un sitio muy especial.

Hello, I am EDU and I am going to tell you about the marvelous and intense trip that I made to New York.  The purpose of my trip was to “EDUcate” a group of very interesting persons regarding our Jerez Wine and Brandy Route and, also, to present a paired wine-tasting with our sherry wines.  It took place at “La Nacional,” which is a very special place.

Además de la cata y como complemento perfecto, organizamos la exposición DIVINO JEREZ de la estupenda fotógrafa María Higuero, amiga y antigua alumna del Colegio Miller.  Surgió por casualidad, como surgen a veces las cosas más inesperadas.  María vio en el blog que nos íbamos a Nueva York a hacer una cata y le preguntó a Vicky si llevaría algunas de sus fotos.  Le pareció una idea genial y de ahí todo salió bordado.

In addition to the wine tasting, and as a perfect complement, we organized the DIVINO JEREZ  photo exhibition, with photos taken by photographer María Higuero, a friend and alumnus of the Miller School.  It happened by chance, as often happens with these kind of unexpected things.  María read our blog and saw that we were traveling to New York to present the wine-tasting and she asked Vicky if she would take some of her photos along  on the planned trip.  Vicky thought it was a great idea and from there on everything worked out perfectly.

María, con sus fotografías debajo del brazo, se fue a Nueva York a montar la exposición y estuvo el día 17 de mayo en la inauguración a la que también asistió, entre otros,  Petra Rodríguez Conde, la Presidente de FAEUSA (Federación de Asociaciones Españolas en USA).  Fue un éxito total.  Nosotros nos la perdimos ya que no llegaríamos hasta el día siguiente.

María, with her photographs tucked under her arm, went to New York to set up the exhibition.  She was present on the 17th of May which was the date of the exhibition opening. Petra Rodríguez Conde, President of the FAEUSA (Federación de Asociaciones Españolas en USA) (Federation of Spanish Associations in the USA) was also present.  It was a complete success.  Unfortunately, we missed it and arrived on the following day.

Del equipo Discover Sherry y Sherry Explorers ibámos: Nieves Sierra, Sofía Nieto, Vicky Miller y yo.  Bueno en la maleta iban más amigos, como Tío Pepe, La Goya, algún amigo de Fernando de Castilla, y muchas cosas para la cata como los salacots y las venencias de Torquemada para el juramento de los nuevos Sherry Explores,  folletos de González Byass, posters,  los picos de Don Pelayo y muchos regalos para sortear en la cata.  El viaje largo. Sofía y Nieves pudieron dormir, Vicky vio una película de OO7, otra de Misión Imposible y escuchó la grabación de César Saldaña y Antonio Flores de la última cata del consejo.  El aeropuerto JFK es una locura, más de una hora tardamos en salir con las maletas y …¡qué sorpresa! nos estaban esperando con un cartel que decía “Sherry Explorers”, muy emocionante.

Representing the Discover Sherry Team, and the Sherry Explorers, were: Nieves Sierra, Sofía Nieto, Vicky Miller, and me  And, of course, in our luggage there were other friends, like Tío Pepe, La Goya, a friend from the Fernando de Castilla winery,  and many other things needed for the wine-tasting, like the pith-helmets and the venencias, made by Mr. Torquemada, to be used for the swearing-in of the new Sherry Explorers.  There were also González Byass brochures, posters, Don Pelayo breadsticks, and many door-prizes for the wine-tasting.  On the long trip over, Sofía and Nieves were able to sleep.  Vicky watched a OO7 film, a   Mission Impossible film, and listened to a recording of César Saldaña and Antonio Flores making their latest wine-tasting presentation at the Regulatory Council.   The JFK airport is a madhouse.  We waited for more than an hour to exit the baggage claim area.  To our surprise, however, there was a driver waiting for us with a placard that read “Sherry Explorers.” It was very exciting.

Tardamos casi otras dos horas en llegar a Times Square donde estaba nuestro hotel.  ¡¡Nuestra habitación estaba en el piso 45!!  Tenía unas vistas impresionantes de Manhattan y el Río Hudson.

It took us almost two hours to arrive to Times Square where our hotel was situated.   Our room was on the 45th floor!  It had some spectacular views of  Manhattan and of  the Hudson River.

Con Petra y Pipe, el primo de Nieves, nos fuimos a cenar y por cierto, cenamos de maravilla.

Along with Petra and Pipe, Nieves´ cousin, we went out and, of course, had a fabulous dinner.

Había que aprovechar cada momento así es que al día siguiente después de un desayuno contundente en Junior´s  (fruta, tortilla con bacon y queso, y ´French Toast´) nos fuimos a dar una vuelta en helicóptero.

We had to take advantage of every moment, so the next day, after a bountiful breakfast at Junior´s  (fruit, cheese and bacon omelette, and French Toast) we were off to take a spin around the city in a helicopter.

¡Qué experiencia! Ver  Manhatan, los ríos, la estatua de la Libertad o los edificios más emblemáticos desde el aire es ….. increíble.

What an experience!  To see Manhattan, the rivers, the Statue of Liberty, and the New York skyline, from the air was….incredible.

Nuestra siguiente visita fue a Wall Street y como es tradición, a ver al toro.  Había cola para tocar, ejem, las partes, porque dicen que trae suerte.  ¡¡Menos mal que a mi me colocaron delante con los cuernos para la foto, si no me da algo!!

Our next stop was Wall Street, and in accordance to tradition, we went to see the bull statue. There was a long line to touch, …ahem, his “parts” because they say that it brings good luck to do so.  I´m glad that we took our photo at the horned end of the bull,  otherwise I would have died of embarrassment!

De allí a la Zona Cero.  Muy impresionante.  Tuvimos suerte, no había mucha cola y pudimos subir al observatorio del One World Trade Center.

From there we went to Ground Zero which was an impressive sight.  We were lucky that there wasn´t a long line and we were able to go up to the observatory deck of the One World Trade Center.

¡Fijaros en el cartel! ¡Me conocen!  Es que los Sherry Explorers somos famosos.

Did you notice the poster?  They know who I am!  I´m sure that it´s because my Sherry Explorers are famous.

Las vistas, como veis, son espectaculares.

The views, as you can see, where amazing.

Después de comer en Macy´s en el restaurante Stellas (podéis ver las fotos en el video que está más abajo), nos fuimos al hotel a recoger todo lo que teníamos que llevar a La Nacional para preparar la cata del día siguiente.  Cada vez que cogíamos un taxi era una aventura.  Menos mal que Nieves tiene mucha experiencia y gracias a ella nos movíamos como pez en el agua.

After having lunch at Stella´s restaurant, inside Macy´s,  (you can see the photos by using the video link which is attached below), we returned to the hotel to gather everything that we needed to take to La Nacional in order to prepare the wine-tasting for the next day.  Each time that we took a taxi was an adventure.  Thankfully, Nieves has a lot of experience traveling around New York, so we were able to move about like fish in the water.

 

Ya habíamos comentado en posts anteriores lo especial que es La Nacional pero  estar allí en persona fue emocionante.  Conocimos a Robert Sanfiz, el Director y a Noelia Lecua.  Son el alma de esta Sociedad Benevolente.  Después de la reunión de trabajo, pudimos visitar este edificio.  Vimos también la exposición de María Higuero en la misma sala donde haríamos la cata.  Los vinos de González Byass ya habían llegado y metimos en la nevera el Tío Pepe y Viña AB.  Todo listo para la cata del día siguiente.

We had already mentioned, in previous posts, how special La Nacional is, but being there in person was very exciting.  We met Robert Sanfiz, the Director, and  Noelia Lecua.  They are the heart and soul of the Spanish Benevolent Society.   After our business meeting, we were able to tour the building.  We also saw María Higuero´s photo exhibit which was displayed in the same room where we would be holding the wine-tasting.  The González Byass wines had arrived, so we placed the Tío Pepe and the Viña AB, in the fridge.  Everything was ready for our presentation on the next day.

También conocimos a la bilbaína Susy Montoya Matheu de la casa de España en San Antonio.  Le regalamos una de mis camisetas y mirar que guapa estaba.

We also met  Susy Montoya Matheu from Bilbao and from San Antonio´s House of Spain.  We gave her one of my T-shirts and you can see how beautiful she looks.

Vicky estaba empeñada en ir a un Sherry Bar así es que nos fuimos a Casa Mono.  Os dejamos un ejemplo de la carta de jereces que nos sorprendió agradablemente.   Es estupendo que sirvan tal variedad de jereces, muy buena señal.

Vicky was insistent that we go to a Sherry Bar, so we went to the Casa Mono (Monkey House).  Above is an excerpt from the sherry wine list,  with which we were pleasantly surprised. It is fantastic that they serve such a variety of sherry wines, which is all that really matters.
