El 8 de febrero embarcó en el Buque Escuela de la Armada Juan Sebastián Elcano un vino de jerez muy especial el XC Palo Cortado de González Byass.  Las dos botas recorrerán los mares conmemorando el 500 aniversario de la Primera Vuelta al Mundo realizada por la expedición Magallanes-Elcano, la cual zarpó de la cercana ciudad de Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  

On the 8th of February, a very special sherry wine – González Byass winery´s XC Palo Cortado – was placed aboard the Spanish Armada´s Training Ship – the Juan Sebastián Elcano.  Both casks will join the ship and its crew on their voyage commemorating the 500th anniversary of the First Circumnavigation of the World which was realized by the  Magallanes-Elcano (Magellan-Elcano) expedition and which set sail from the nearby town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Será un  viaje de vino de Ida y Vuelta recuperando así la tradición del pasado que consistía en el envío de botas a navegar por el mundo para lograr un Jerez único y de mayor calidad. Estos vinos fueron muy populares en el comercio de ultramar llegando a quintuplicar su precio al regresar a Cádiz. La notable mejora en sus cualidades organolépticas y singularidad, se debía a factores como la temperatura, la presión y, sobre todo, el vaivén continuo de las olas del mar.

Mauricio González-Gordon, Presidente de González Byass y el Comandante del Juan Sebastián Elcano, Ignacio Paz, firmaron el Manifiesto de Carga, confirmando su carga valiosa de dos botas del  XC Palo Cortado. 

It will be a “Round-Trip” wine voyage which will replicate the past tradition of sending casks of sherry to sail throughout the world in order to create a unique sherry wine of superior quality.   These wines were a very popular item within the overseas shipping trade and sometimes garnered five times its original value upon returning to the port of Cádiz.  The notable enrichment in the organoleptic qualities of the wine, as well as its uniqueness,  was a result of factors such as temperature, air pressure, and, above all, the continuous rocking of the ocean waves.

Mauricio González-Gordon, President of the González Byass winery and Ignacio Paz, Captain of the Juan Sebastián Elcano,  both signed the Ship´s  Cargo Manifest confirming the Ship´s precious cargo – two casks of XC Palo Cortado.
