Hace 20 años, en 1998, la Ciudad de Jerez se hermanó con la Ciudad de El Paso, Texas.  Me casé con un tejano y llevaba unos añitos viviendo en El Paso.  Era Presidenta del Club de España, Paso del Norte y me tomaba muy en serio lo de “hacer patria”.  Contactamos con el grupo Albatros, la asociación municipal que se encargaba de los hermanamientos y empezamos a organizar todo.  Hicimos coincidir la firma del acuerdo con la gran celebración del IV Centenario en la que se celebraban los 400 años de la llegada de los españoles cruzando el Río Grande por el Camino Real de tierra adentro.  Pero vamos por partes.

Twenty years ago, in April of 1998, the City of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain became the Sister City of the City of El Paso, Texas.  I had married a Texan and I had been living in El Paso for a few years.  I was the President of the  Club de España, Paso del Norte (in El Paso) and  I took my role, in promoting the Spanish culture, seriously. We made contact with the Albatross group , which was the municipal organization in Jerez in charge of establishing sister-city relationships and we began to work on our agreement. We were able to coordinate the signing of the agreement with the Quadricentennial celebration, in El Paso,  commemorating the arrival of the Spanish colonists when they crossed the Rio Grande en route, via the Camino Real, through what later became the Southwest U.S.  But, let me tell you about the different aspects of our celebration.

El Dr. José Rodríguez Carrión como Primer Teniente de Alcalde, representó a la alcaldía y firmó el documento de hermanamiento.  También representando a la ciudad de Jerez vinieron el Sr. Diego Domouso y el Sr. Evaristo Babé del Consejo Regulador.  En los días que estuvieron en El Paso fue impresionante la promoción que se hizo, además de la ciudad, del vino y brandy de jerez.  Organizamos distintas reuniones, cenas y cócteles en los que los jereces y el brandy eran el centro de atracción.  Era verdaderamente emocionante ver cómo los paseños descubrían nuestros vinos.  Pensad que estamos hablando de hace 20 años de una ciudad en el medio oeste, en el desierto, y todos brindando con una copa de jerez en la mano.  ¡Fue genial!

Dr. José Rodríguez Carrión, as Mayor Pro Tem,  represented the City of Jerez and signed the sister city agreement.  Also present were Mr. Diego Domouso, who also represented the City of Jerez,  and Mr. Evaristo Babé, who represented the Sherry Wine Regulatory Council.  During the days that they spent in El Paso, it was impressive to see the presentations that were made to promote tourism to the City of Jerez, as well as to promote our Sherry wines and Brandy.  We were able to organize various meetings, dinners, and cocktail parties at which Sherry wines and Brandy were always the center of attention.  It was truly exciting to see how El Pasoans discovered our culture and our wines.  Bear in mind that this was twenty years ago, in a Southwest U.S. city located in the middle of a desert, and that everyone was toasting with a glass of Sherry Wine in their hand.  It was great!

Como os comentaba, el hermanamiento coincidió con la celebración del IV Centenario del Primer Día de Acción de Gracias que celebraron los primeros colonos en la orilla del Río Grande el 30 de abril de 1598 al haber cruzado el peligroso desierto del norte de  Chihuahua con Don Juan de Oñate a la cabeza.   Hubo un desfile de militares españoles luciendo los uniformes de la época diseñados por el historiador José Antonio Crespo Francés  de los de la época en cuestión al igual que la preciosa bandera copia también de la de D. Juan de Oñate.

As I mentioned previously, the signing of the sister-city agreement coincided with the 400th anniversary of the “First Thanksgiving” in the U.S.,  which was when the first Spanish colonists celebrated their safe crossing across the northern Chihuahua desert.  It was held on the river bank of the Rio Grande on the 30th of April 1958, with Don Juan de Oñate leading the expedition.   At our celebration, there was a parade of Spanish military members who wore period uniforms representing those that were worn 400 years earlier, and which were designed by military historian José Antonio Crespo Francés.  He also recreated a beautiful military banner that had led the way for the Don Juan de Oñate expedition.

En esta celebración  estuvieron presentes el Vice primer ministro del Gobierno Español, el Sr. Álvarez Cascos así como el Embajador de España en EE.UU. y el Cónsul General de España de Houston entre otras autoridades.  También asistieron varios miembros de la familia  Gullón, descendientes directos de D. Juan de Oñate.  La Embajada ofreció un cóctel privado para los miembros del Club de España.  La Gala que culminó la celebración estuvo presidida por el entonces Gobernador de Texas, George W. Bush.  En fin, muy buenos recuerdos y el día de la Cena de Honor del día 13 de abril, haremos un brindis por este XX aniversario del Hermanamiento Jerez-El Paso con la asistencia de algunos miembros del grupo Albatros.

At this celebration, we were honored with the presence of the Vice Prime Minister of the Spanish Government, Mr. Álvarez Cascos, as well as the Spanish Ambassador to the U.S.  and the Spanish Consul General from Houston.  There were several members of the Gullón family, who are direct descendants of Don Juan de Oñate.  The Spanish Embassy sponsored a private cocktail party for all of the members of the Club de España.  The gala dinner event was the end of the celebration, and the presiding guest was then Texas Governor, George W. Bush.   In summary, it was a very memorable celebration.  On April the 13th of this year, with the help of some of the members of the Albatross group, we will be making a toast, at the Sherry Explorers´ Celebratory Dinner in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between the cities of Jerez and El Paso.
