We recently received a visit from one of our New York Sherry Explorer, Antonio Morales. Antonio was sworn-in during the Sherry-wine harmonized dinner held during the national conference of the 2016 FAEUSA at “La Nacional” in New York. Nieves, Sofía, and Vicky, of the Discover Sherry Team, all went to New York to present Sherry wines provided by the González-Byass winery which were paired with a traditional Spanish menu. It was a wonderful experience.
It was a pleasure to greet Antonio and welcome him to Jerez. We enjoyed a leisurely long-lunch at the La Carboná restaurant where we marveled at the exquisite culinary creations of Javier Muñoz, the “Sherry Chef.” We also had the pleasure of being accompanied by Petra Rodríguez Conde, the FAEUSA President, and María Higuero, a local photographer/artist who has already had two photo exhibits displayed at La Nacional. Of course, Nieves Sierra and I were there representing the Discover Sherry Team. Interestingly, all of those present are Sherry Explorers. Antonio Morales is the President of the “La Nacional-Spanish Benevolent Society” where we held the Sherry-tasting and María displayed her photographs. La Nacional is the oldest Spanish cultural center in New York City and it has a fascinating history. It was founded in 1868. Its primary goal was to “promote, encourage, and spread the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity amongst the Spanish and Hispanic-American residents of (the U.S.).” In the initial years, the society would help Spanish immigrants to the U.S. with financial support, lodging, medical and funeral services, and also served as a meeting place for those who were far from home. Nowadays, it serves as a multi-cultural center and houses an excellent restaurant featuring Spanish cuisine. If you are in New York City, we highly recommend that you drop by for a visit.
