Hace 500 años Magallanes y Elcano salieron con cinco naves desde Sevilla y Sanlúcar en busca de especias y sin haberlo planeado circunnavegaron la Tierra por primera vez en la historia.  Es un evento verdaderamente fascinante y cuanto más se aprende sobre él, más impresiona que fueran capaces de semejante hazaña en aquellos tiempos complicados.

Los Sherry Explorers comenzamos nuestro aprendizaje sobre esta aventura, con esta visita a Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  Realizamos un recorrido en tren con nuestra guía Ana, por la ciudad, Bajo de Guía, desembocadura del Guadalquivir, Barrio Bajo, Barrio Alto, etc.. Ana nos iba explicando los cambios que ha habido desde aquella época.

500 years ago, Magellan and Elcano set sail, along with five ships, from Sevilla and Sanlúcar in search of spices.  Without planning to do so, they eventually completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, in history.  It was a truly significant accomplishment, and once you begin to learn more about it, you are more impressed with what they were capable of doing during those difficult times.

The Sherry Explorers began our discovery of the details related to this adventure with a quick visit through the town of  Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  We toured the city on the visitor´s train along with our guide Ana.  We saw the Bajo de Guía area, the mouth of the Guadalquivir, the Barrio Bajo and Barrio Alto, as well as other parts of the town. Ana explained the changes that the town had undergone since the era when Magellan was there. Nuestra primera parada fue en el Castillo de los Guzmanes que forma parte del patrimonio histórico artístico de la Fundación Casa de Medina Sidonia.  El Palacio está formado por una serie de edificios de diversas épocas y la visita es muy interesante ya que se va pasando por diferentes siglos y épocas según se recorre el palacio.  Hay un precioso jardín sobre lo que fuera la antigua barranca de Sanlúcar, y sobre la que descansa el muro de contención del Palacio con una vista espectacular.

Our first stop was at the  Castillo de los Guzmanes (Guzman Castle) which is part of the historic/artistic legacy of the Casa de Medina Sidonia Foundation.  The Palace is comprised of a series of buildings built during various historical periods.  The tour of the Palace is very interesting since you can see the art and relics that are pertinent to each of those periods of history.  The Palace also has a beautiful garden which lies over the ancient Sanlúcar ravine, and over which the Palace walls are built.  This ideal location provides a spectacular view of the entire town of Sanlúcar and the Guadalquivir River.Siguiendo con nuestra visita, bajamos del Barrio Alto hacia la sede del Círculo de Artesanos donde nos recibió el Presidente del Círculo de Artesanos, Enrique J. Román, nos enseñó la magnífica exposición que tienen sobre la circunnavegación, muy interesante.  Después nos presentó una interesantísima ponencia sobre la primera Vuelta al Mundo. Continuing on, we walked down from the Barrio Alto to the headquarters of the Círculo de Artesanos were we were met by the  President of the Círculo de Artesanos, Enrique J. Román.  He showed us the fascinating exhibit that they have prepared explaining the details of the voyage that led to the circumnavigation.   Afterwards, he provided us with a very interesting presentation regarding some more details regarding this first voyage around the world. You can see more photos of Mr. Román´s presentation  and our visit in the video that we have attached.  The background music is a song performed by the  Habaneras musical group, to which Mr. Román belongs.  You will love it.Después de una intensa mañana de aprendizaje, los Sherry Explorers disfrutamos de Manzanilla La Goya de las Bodegas Delgado Zuleta, todo un lujo.  La acompañamos con tapitas que aportamos los asistentes y unas tapas exquisitas elaboradas por el Sherry Explorer Antonio Peña de la tienda de vinos y delicatessen dealbariza.  Algunos compramos el libro “La Flota de las Molucas” de José Carlos García Rodríguez, escrito para los que empiezan a adentrarse en esta fascinante aventura.

After such an intense morning of learning, the  Sherry Explorers  enjoyed some cold La Goya Manzanilla, which was provided by the Delgado Zuleta Winery.  What a luxury!  We accompanied it with the tapas which we had brought, in addition to some that were provided by  Sherry Explorer Antonio Peña, owner of the dealbariza, Wine Store and Delicatessen.  Some of us purchased the book  “La Flota de las Molucas” (The Molucca Islands Fleet) by José Carlos García Rodríguez, which was written for those who are beginning to discover and understand the curious details of this incredible journey.
